Dairy Traditions Shine at the 2025 Iowa State Fair

Written by Midwest Dairy Association

Each August, the Iowa State Fair transforms Des Moines into a vibrant showcase of the state’s agricultural heritage. It’s where record-breaking crowds gather to celebrate Iowa’s farming traditions, connect with local producers, and, of course, enjoy delicious dairy. From the legendary Butter Cow to the must-try treats at the Dairy Barn, dairy farmers continue to shine as a cornerstone of the fair. Midwest Dairy is proud to help farmers share the hard work, innovation, and passion that define one of Iowa’s most beloved industries.

This year introduced a new twist to tradition with Fair After Dark, an after-hours event at the Little Hands on the Farm exhibit. Partnering with the Iowa State Fair and fellow commodity groups, Midwest Dairy created an evening tailored to Gen Z and young adult fairgoers. More than 150 people gathered for a relaxed evening of conversation and fun, with topics such as food, farming, and sustainability taking center stage. With its laid-back energy, the event sparked fresh conversations fostered connections between consumers and farmers.

No trip to the fair is complete without a stop at the Dairy Barn. In 2025, the return of Raspberry Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt as the official “Flavor of the Fair” had visitors lining up to taste the creamy, nostalgic treat. Back by popular demand after a strong debut last year, the sweet-tart swirl quickly became a must-have treat. Alongside the yogurt, fairgoers enjoyed the full menu of dairy delights, once again proving that nothing cools off a hot August day quite like Iowa dairy.

Beyond the food and festivities, the fair also spotlighted the next generation of dairy advocates. The Iowa Dairy Princess and Ambassador programs brought energy and excitement to the grounds, as young leaders shared their love of dairy through cooking demonstrations, volunteer efforts with the Iowa Food and Family Project, and interactive activities at the Kids’ Club. Their enthusiasm made a lasting impression on visitors and reminded everyone that the future of dairy is in capable, passionate hands. Congratulations to Kelsey Timp, who was crowned the 72nd Iowa Dairy Princess during the fair, as well as Alia Domeyer, who was named Iowa Dairy Princess Alternate.

Of course, no fair would be complete without a visit to see the Butter Cow. In 2025, master butter sculptor Sarah Pratt continued the beloved tradition, presenting the iconic cow alongside characters from Toy Story in honor of the film’s 30th anniversary. The whimsical display drew thousands of smiles, blending nostalgia with artistry while underscoring dairy’s enduring place in Iowa’s fair story.

From the innovative spirit of Fair After Dark to the time-honored tradition of the Butter Cow, dairy’s presence at the 2025 Iowa State Fair was impossible to miss. Every scoop, sculpture, and conversation reflected the pride and creativity of Iowa’s dairy farmers. It’s a celebration that honors the past, engages the present, and inspires the future. Once again, dairy is at the heart of the Iowa State Fair.
