J&S Dairy: A Growing Legacy
Building a Legacy
J&S Dairy is built on hard work, innovation, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Owned and operated by husband-and-wife duo, John & Sharon VanderWaal, along with 3 of their children, Krysta, Craig and Dawn, each one contributes to the daily rhythms of the dairy.
J&S Dairy began in 2017 with the installation of four Lely A4 robotic milking units—an early sign of the family’s dedication to technology and efficiency, as well as thinking about the next generation. As their herd and vision grew, so did the farm.
In 2018 they built a heifer shed to raise their own replacements. In 2021 they added a hay shed to support forage needs, and then in 2024-2025 they updated their robots to Lely A5’s and added a fifth robot.
Each step has helped J&S Dairy expand their capabilities, improve cow comfort, and strengthen their long-term sustainability.
Farm Snapshot
Today, the family milks approximately 280 Holsteins using five Lely A5 robots. Beyond the dairy herd, they also raise corn for silage, rye, and soybeans, making their operation a diverse and well-rounded part of Iowa’s agricultural landscape.
What Fuels Their Passion
For the VanderWaal’s, the excitement of dairy farming comes from watching their cows thrive. Seeing strong production and long, productive lifespans motivates them daily and reinforces why they love being part of the dairy industry.
Encouragement for Fellow Dairymen
Their advice is simple but powerful: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and share your successes and failures.”
In an industry that depends on community, resilience, and ongoing improvement, their words ring true for us all.
